Boren-ROTC Initiative

The Boren Scholarships offer a special initiative for undergraduate ROTC cadets and midshipmen. ROTC participants are strong candidates for the Boren Scholarship, due to their commitment to national security and government service.

Eligibility

Any Army, Air Force, or Naval ROTC student on track to commission is eligible for this initiative. Applicants must also meet the general Boren eligibility requirements. In addition, ROTC students must be in an inactive, non-drilling status during the Boren-funded overseas study.

Scholarship AFLI - French

African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) applicants for French (with survival Wolof) must participate in the official summer AFLI program at the University of Florida, as well as the official fall AFLI program in Senegal, administered by American Councils for International Education and hosted at the West African Research Center.

Eligible applicants must be at an ACTFL intermediate high or above oral proficiency level in French. The Boren Awards will test highly-rated applicants prior to final selection to confirm eligibility.

Scholarship AFLI - Portuguese

African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) applicants for Portuguese participate in the official summer AFLI program at the University of Florida, as well as the official fall AFLI program in Mozambique, administered by American Councils for International Education and hosted at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane.

Scholarship AFLI - Akan/Twi, Wolof, and Zulu

African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) applicants for Akan/Twi, Wolof, and Zulu must participate in the official summer AFLI program at the University of Florida. This full-time program is appropriate for those with no previous experience in the language, as well as those at a novice or intermediate level.

Because there are no official AFLI overseas programs for these languages, applicants must identify an appropriate study abroad program in which they can study the appropriate language. The program may start no later than September 15.
