Boren Awards Program Information on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Boren Awards in 2022 will continue to prioritize longer-term, immersive overseas language study as directed by the National Security Education Act. We recognize that the COVID pandemic has caused unprecedented disruptions in travel and international study. Student safety will always be our first priority, and we will closely monitor the country conditions as well as travel advisories of the State Department  and Centers for Disease Control before approving overseas study.

Selection for the 2022 Boren Scholarships and Fellowships will proceed as normal, with all countries on our preferred list given equal priority. Proposed overseas study may begin as early as June 4, 2022 or as late as March 1, 2023, as in a normal application cycle.

It is likely that circumstances will require some 2022 awardees to postpone their study or select an alternate program or country. We cannot predict which countries will be cleared for travel in June 2022 and beyond. We will continue to work flexibly with awardees to find suitable overseas alternatives.

All 2019, 2020, and 2021 awardees may apply for 2022 Boren Scholarships or Fellowships if they remain eligible. Prior Boren Awards applications, whether successful or not, will not affect the chances of selection.
