Developing a Boren Awards Budget
Published in November 2009 Newsletter
The Boren Scholarship and Fellowship require applicants to submit an itemized budget as part of the application. While the scholarship and fellowship differ slightly, both budgets should include expenses such as tuition, living costs, books, supplies, equipment, travel, and insurance. Actual award amounts will be determined by each individual budget and the length of the project.
Boren Scholarship awards are designed to pay for many of the expenses a typical undergraduate student will have while studying abroad. The maximum award amounts for the Boren Scholarship are $20,000 for a year long program, $10,000 for a semester program, and $8,000 for a summer program (special initiative for STEM students only; 8 weeks minimum). If you are participating in a study abroad program administered by your campus study abroad office, use the budget they provide to complete the budget section of your application.
The Boren Fellowship can be used to support overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. The maximum awards for overseas study are $24,000 for 37-52 weeks, $20,000 for 25-36 weeks, and $12,000 for 12-24 weeks. For domestic-only study, the maximum award amount is $12,000. If your proposal includes overseas and domestic programs, you must provide separate budgets for a maximum of $30,000 of support over 24 months. Please note that, for both the scholarship and the fellowship, underestimating your expenses will not make your application more competitive. You should be as accurate as possible.
