The Boren Awards application deadlines are quickly approaching and winter break is a popular time for applicants to work on their applications.  However, in celebration of the holidays, the Institute of International Education will be closed December 23-26, 2011.  In addition, there will be limited staff in the office through January 3, 2012.

If you plan to work on your application over the holidays, please make sure you are able to login prior to December 23, 2011.  Questions and login issues sent when our office is closed will be handled as quickly as possible after our office reopens.

If you are applying for a Boren Scholarship or Fellowship, don’t miss our upcoming webinars!  We will be discussing the service requirement, giving detailed explanations of the applications, and providing advice on how to make your essays more competitive.

The Boren Fellowship application requires that you complete a number of steps online and that you submit your transcipts by mail.  In order to be eligible, your application must be complete by January 31, 2012.

In order for your Boren Scholarship application to be complete, you must submit an online application and supplementary materials.  The supplementary materials should be given to your Boren campus representative and the online application should be submitted by your on-campus deadline.  If you do not have a campus representative, the online application must be submitted and all original supplementary materials must arrive at the Institute of International Education by February 9, 2012.

I took some community college courses in the 70’s, but dropped out before finishing.  In 2007, I went back to community college.  This time, as a nontraditional student, I had far more focus.  I needed to build a strong academic record so that I could transfer and earn my undergraduate degree.  Once I transferred to California State University, East Bay, I gained a new vision for what I might be able to accomplish.  My professors and advisors urged me to consider a study abroad program as part of my degree.  It made sense.  I saw that travel and study abroad could enhance my overall educational experience and strengthen my growing desire to use language skills to augment a new career direction.

I am half-Palestinian and half-American, and I was born and raised in Spain.  This gave me a sincere appreciation for language: I am fluent in Spanish, English, and French.  When I came to the United States for college and started graduate school at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, one of my goals was to become proficient in Arabic.  Thanks to the Boren Fellowship, I am now very close to that goal.
