The Boren Awards application deadlines are quickly approaching.  If you haven’t already, please visit the Boren Awards website to begin your application.

The national application deadline for the Boren Scholarship for undergraduate students is February 10, 2010.  You may have an earlier on-campus deadline.  Check your campus representative’s information online to see your campus deadline and upcoming events. 

The application deadline for the Boren Fellowship for graduate students is January 28, 2010.  All materials must arrive at IIE by the deadline.

The Boren Scholarship provides funding for undergraduate students to study abroad and, in the application, students must identify a primary and an alternate program.  If you are an undergraduate student applying for the Boren Scholarship, you should select a study abroad program that includes significant language study while also considering the Boren program preferences and your own personal, academic, and professional goals.

The Boren Awards review committees carefully review letters of reference and a weakly written or lackluster recommendation can send up a red flag.  With that said, there are a few things you can do to ensure that the people writing your letters are well-informed and prepared to write a strong, meaningful letter of support.

Having lived in Jordan and Lebanon three times prior, Andrew Kosydar, a Ph.D. candidate in biology from the University of Washington, recognized the importance of learning Arabic in order to complete his research.  Therefore, he applied for, and received, a Boren Fellowship in 2008 to study Arabic and continue his research on conservation efforts within Lebanon’s national parks.

While double majoring in English linguistics and Russian at Arizona State University, Laurie Dermer received a Boren Scholarship to study Russian language for the 2008-09 academic year in Moscow.  Through 20 hours of formal language instruction per week and constant interaction with her host family, Laurie left Russia being able to better read, listen, and understand the Russian language.

Both the Boren Scholarship and Boren Fellowship applications are reviewed by regional and national merit panels.  Every year, approximately 75 faculty and staff volunteer to serve on these panels.  The regional panels meet in March, review the applications primarily based on world region, and recommend a set number of applications to be reviewed by the national nominating panel.  The national nominating panels meet in April to review the results of the regional panels and make final recommendations.
