A Boren Fellow from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign conducted research towards her doctoral dissertation on educational policy studies in Kenya. She studied Swahili and educational practices among the Turkana people.

A Boren Scholar from the University of Arkansas who is majoring in international relations with a minor in Latin American studies spent a year in Brazil studying Portuguese language and Brazilian culture. The Scholar’s program in Sao Paulo gave him a home stay experience and total immersion in the Portuguese language.

Brandon Marc Higa, a 2005 graduate from the University of Southern California, received a Boren Fellowship to study Japanese with Stanford University’s advanced intensive Japanese language program in Yokohama, Japan. During the first half of the year-long program, Brandon Marc took an intensive Japanese course focused on improving his language skills for competency in social and academic situations. The second half of the program centered on learning specialized Japanese for his major, international relations. With his specialized language skills, Brandon Marc completed a report about Japan’s free trade agreement policies.

Please use the following as a guide for submitting a complete application. The national application is February 11, 2009, but you should contact your campus representative for your earlier on-campus deadline.
