Canisius College sophomore Candace B. Lukasik is a recipient of a Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) from the U.S. Department of State.

Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, Critical Language Scholarships are awarded to U.S. citizens who are undergraduate, master’s and PhD students or recent graduates. They receive funding to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. The program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government interagency effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages.

Lukasik is a political science and international relations major at Canisius. She is also a recent recipient of a Boren Scholarship for International Study, which is managed by the Institute for International Education (IIE) and funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP). Lukasik will use both the Boren and CLS scholarships to study Arabic for one year at the American University, Cairo. She will return to Canisius College for her senior year.

Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the nation and the premier private college in Western New York. Canisius prepares leaders – intelligent, caring, faithful individuals – able to pursue and promote excellence in their professions, their communities and their service to humanity.
