African Languages Initiative: Special Instructions for Boren Fellowship Applicants
Boren Fellowship applicants interested in the African Languages Initiative should follow the regular application instructions, while also following the below guidelines.
Special Instructions for Swahili, Yoruba, and Zulu
Program Information
- Question 1. Program Abstract: Indicate that you are applying for the African Languages Initiative, specifying the language and the time frame – i.e. “I will be participating in the summer and fall Swahili African Languages Initiative programs.” If you will be adding on an additional overseas program, explain that too.
- Question 13. Proposed Overseas Affiliation Type: Select “Language Institute.” If you have a second affiliation, select that as well.
- Question 14. Proposed Overseas Affiliation Name: Enter “African Languages Initiative.” If you have a second affiliation, enter that too.
- Questions 17-18. Are you applying to the African Languages Initiative, and if yes, which program? Answer yes, and select the appropriate language.
Budget Forms
- Questions 1-2. The start dates for the official African Languages Initiative domestic programs are available on the University of Florida's program website.
- Questions 3-4. Overseas program dates for the official African Languages Initiative Swahili, Yoruba, and Zulu programs can be found on the program website. If you are adding additional study overseas, your overseas end date should reflect that.
- Questions 5-6. Enter the total duration of your domestic and overseas Boren-funded study. Your total overseas duration may not exceed 12 months and your total duration may not exceed 24 months.

Costs for the official African Languages Initiative overseas programs can be found on the program website. If you are staying in country after the official fall African Languages Initiative program, make sure you enter your total costs, and use the overseas budget detail section to explain the cost breakdown.Domestic Program Budget
If you are requesting funding for the summer 2012 official African Languages Initiative program, enter $7,400 into the summer 2012 domestic budget field. This includes $4,900 for tuition and $2,500 for estimated room and board. Please note that this only applies to the African Languages Initiative domestic programs. If you are requesting any other domestic funding, you must enter the cost and description.
Special Instructions for Akan/Twi and Wolof
Program Information
- Question 1. Program Abstract: Indicate that you are applying for the domestic African Languages Initiative program and write a short explanation of your overseas plan.
- Questions 17-18. Are you applying to the African Languages Initiative, and if yes, which program? Answer yes, and select the appropriate language.
Budget Forms
- Questions 1-2. The start dates for the official African Languages Initiative domestic programs are available on the University of Florida's program website.
- Questions 3-4. Your overseas program should begin in September 2012 and must end within a year.
